Looking for a Book Club? Here’s Your Next Stop

In the search of new articles and other resources, I have found a new community that might get the interest of all women in tech. The community is a book club called STEMMinist for the people who are interested in STEMM. For the ones who haven’t heard about the word STEMM, it is an abbreviation for Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathematics-Medicine.

The book club is moderated by Dr. Caroline Ford who is a cancer researcher from Sydney. From the beginning of 2018, Caroline Ford has decided to set a new book as a to-read goal for the club each one or two months. Now, STEMMinist had passed 2000 members worldwide!

The books that the club had read so far are listed below:

  • Inferior is the first book of the club, written by Angela Saini. In this book, the writer takes readers on an eye-opening journey to uncover how women are being rediscovered. She explores what these revelations mean for us as individuals and as a society, revealing an alternative view of science in which women are included, rather than excluded.

  • Stop Fixing Women is the second book of the club in which the writer, Catherine Fox creates an important tool for male leaders who say they want to make a difference. She throws down the gauntlet, showing how business, defence, public service and community leaders might do it, rather than just talk about it. She shows that not only will this be better for women but for productivity as well, not to mention men and women’s health and happiness at home and at work.

  • Third book of the STEMMinist is Testosterone Rex by Cordelia Fine. In this book, the writer explains why past and present sex roles are only serving suggestions for the future, revealing a much more dynamic situation through an entertaining and well-documented exploration of the latest research that draws on evolutionary science, psychology, neuroscience, endocrinology, and philosophy.

  • The pick of the book club for May and June months is A Lab of One’s Own: Science and Suffrage in the First World War by Patricia Fara. In this book, Patricia Fara unearths the forgotten suffragists of World War I who bravely changed women’s roles in the war and paved the way for today’s female scientists.

These four books are the ones that have already been read by STEMMinist’s. Here is the book that the book club currently reads for the July/August months:

The book is Lab Girl by Hope Jahren. Core of this book is the story of a relationship Jahren forged with a brilliant, wounded man named Bill, who becomes her lab partner and best friend. Their sometimes rogue adventures in science take them from the Midwest across the United States and back again, over the Atlantic to the ever-light skies of the North Pole and to tropical Hawaii, where she and her lab currently make their home.
